Thailand Army chief announces military coup, constitution suspended

Thailand's new military junta announced it suspended the country's constitution Thursday.

The news came a few hours after Thailand's army chief announced a military takeover of the government, saying the coup was necessary to restore stability and order after six months of political deadlock and turmoil.

A military statement broadcast on national television Thursday confirmed the nation's caretaker government is no longer in power, but said the Senate will remain in place.

Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha made the announcement in a broadcast on national television that the commission that imposed martial law Tuesday would now take control of the country's administration.

"It is necessary for the Peace and Order Maintaining Command -- which includes army, navy, armed forces and police -- to take control of governing the country," Prayuth said.

Prayuth also announced a nationwide curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

There was no immediate sign of soldiers patrolling central Bangkok, but troops dispersed the two protest sites where competing groups were camped out — one backing the ousted government and one that had struggled for six months to unseat it. There were no signs of resistance or reports of violence.

Long lines formed at the city's elevated train and subway stations as panicked office workers tried to rush home before the curfew.

The developments followed two days of army-mediated meetings between the country's rival political leaders that failed to break the impasse. The meetings were held at an army facility in Bangkok.

Shortly before the announcements were made, armed soldiers in military vehicles surrounded the building, apparently to block those inside from leaving.

Many of the country's highest-profile figures were summoned for the meeting. They included the acting prime minister — who sent four Cabinet ministers in his place — and anti-government protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban, as well as Suthep's rival from the pro-government Red Shirt group, Jatuporn Prompan. Reporters at the meeting said Suthep and Jatuporn were escorted out of the meeting by soldiers.

A government official, Paradorn Pattanathabutr, contacted shortly after the announcements, said that the four ministers attending the meeting were still being held by the military.

"The rest of us who are outside are still fine and in the safe places. However, the situation is very worrying. We have to monitor it closely and don't know what else can happen," he said.

Thailand has been gripped by bouts of political instability for more than seven years.

The latest round of unrest started in November, when demonstrators took to the streets to try to force Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down. They accused her of being a proxy for her popular billionaire brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a 2006 military coup and now lives in self-imposed exile to avoid a jail sentence on a corruption conviction.

The coup announced Thursday was the 12th since the country's absolute monarchy ended in 1932.

Prayuth said that the military would "provide protection" for foreigners in Thailand.

Marco Rubio: I’m Ready to be President

From Glenn Beck's - The Blaze

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said Sunday that he thinks he is ready to be the leader of the free world — then issued a scathing criticism of Hillary Clinton, seen as the Democratic frontrunner for 2016.

“I do,” the 42-year-old freshman senator responded, when asked by ABC’s Jonathan Karl if he’s ready to be president. “But I think that’s true for multiple other people that would want to run … I mean, I’ll be 43 this month, but the other thing that perhaps people don’t realize, I’ve served now in public office for the better part of 14 years.”

“Most importantly, I think a president has to have a clear vision of where the country needs to go and clear ideas about how to get it there and I think we’re very blessed in our party to have a number of people that fit that criteria,” he added.

Rubio, who is widely expected to launch a 2016 run for the White House, said if he does decide to seek the nation’s highest office, he would not simultaneously seek reelection as a senator in Florida.

“I believe that if you want to be president of the United States, you run for president,” he said. “You don’t run for president with some eject button in the cockpit that allows you to go on an exit ramp if it doesn’t work out.”

“I believe that if you want to be president of the United States, you run for president.”

During his interview with Karl, Rubio also hammered Clinton.

The conservative firebrand gave her an”F” as secretary of state, saying the “diplomacy that was pursued in her time in the State Department” has ” failed everywhere in the world.”

“I’m sure she’s going to go out bragging about her time in the State Department. She’s also going to have to be held accountable for its failures, whether it’s the failed reset with Russia or the failure in Benghazi that actually cost lives,”

Newfoundland Stranded Whale Probably Won't Explode

Exploding whales—they boast a fairly brief, but dramatic history on the internet. Of course, who could forget this horrifying, totally disgusting, but oddly compelling video of a sperm whale carcass exploding in the Faroe Islands

So when a dead blue whale washed ashore in Trout River, Newfoundland, last week, the Internet had to know: Would it explode?

Helpfully, one expert made us a handy web site: hasthewhaleexplodedyet.com. It’s the work of Andrew David Thaler, a PhD in marine science and a deep-sea ecologist based in the Bay Area of California. He’s also the editor-in-chief of Southern Fried Science, a science writer for Upwell, and a disseminator of fascinating ocean stuff on Twitter at @SFriedScientist So we had to track him down and ask the million-dollar questions. Why do whales explode? Just how gross/bad is it when they do? What’s going to happen with this one in Newfoundland?
Here’s a hint—it’s good for the town, but maybe bad for the internet.
Read on for everything you wanted to know about exploding dead whales.

Fusion: As a deep-sea ecologist, what is your particular interest in whales?
Andrew David Thaler: I actually work a lot with dead whales, in the deep sea. When a whale dies at sea, it tends to sink, and that’s a huge input of food into deep-sea ecosystem, which tend to be very food-limited. So it represents basically a massive input of energy and you get these huge, unique communities that grow and live around them. So I’m very interested in dead whales, primarily at sea-—but I’m also always entertained when whales wash ashore and these kinds of news stories break.

You mentioned that usually, dead whales sink. So why would a dead whale wash onto shore, like this one has done?
Sometimes when whales die close to shore, they strand. Sometimes whales will strand first, then die. I don’t actually know the specifics of what caused these particular whales-—there are actually three of them along the Newfoundland coast—-I don’t know the specifics of what cause these three particular whales to strand, and we won’t know until a necropsy is done, which I believe the Canadian government is preparing.
